Sara Levy (1761-1854) was a Jewish patron of music, a collector, and a keyboard virtuoso. She shaped the musical culture of her time and overcame obstacles of religion and gender to transform Berlin’s artistic landscape, acting as a catalyst for the “Bach revival” of the 19th century.
Rebecca (harpsichord) and Benjamin (violin) will discuss and perform some of the music owned and played by Sara Levy.
Dr. Rebecca Cypess is on the faculty of Rutgers University, having served previously as a faculty member in musicology at the New England Conservatory. She has also taught in the Department of Music at Yale University, at the Yale School of Music, and at Southern Connecticut State University.
Benjamin Shute has performed internationally on modern and period instruments as soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, and concertmaster.
